"APUSH" is the commonly used abbreviation for the College
Board backed course "Advanced Placement United States History."
The course is generally offered as an elective to Sophomores and
Juniors in high schools throughout the US.
An AP course is distinguished from a regular or honors course in
several ways. First, it is supposed to be taught at the college
level and should be equivalent to a survey course in US History.
Second, students have the opportunity (and, as at HIES, may be required)
to take a rigorous, comprehensive exam in early May over the subject
matter. Third, students receive not only high school credits and
grades, but may--if they score highly enough on the AP Exam and
their University or College grants it--earn college credit.
